Bony landmarks are incredible important for proper positioning of the goniometer when measuring range of motion. If you are not palpating a landmark before measurement, you are not ensuring accurate readings from the goniometer. Proper positioning is necessary for the test to be repeated multiple times especially when needing to obtain measurements from different therapists.

Gravity-eliminated position would be used if the client is unable to perform the muscle with gravity and resistance. When perform MMT, you provide resistance against the action and count to five if the client is unable to perform the ROM completely or hold resistance against the action, you would need to put them into a gravity eliminated position. When performing gravity eliminated, there is only one force being applied and that is of the limb itself. It is also important to be able to see if they can perform the action without the force of gravity.
