I chose to complete the online interactive instructional unit: An Introduction to Assistive Technology. I chose this learning adventure because it is something I really would like to know more about, especially before I start fieldwork. I have always known what assistive technology from seeing it while I was shadowing but I never knew about the different categories of AT. The complexity of low tech, medium tech, and high tech increases respectively. There are many myths about AT but research shows that they are not true. Overall, AT has shown benefits and enhancements in learning capabilities. AT is a great way to help your clients when they are having difficulty with different tasks and may need support from AT to help complete the task.
I chose the podcast about OT, Breast Cancer + Pilates to listen to next. My aunt has been diagnosed with breast cancer twice and it hit home for me. I wanted to learn how all of these things related so that I could tell my aunt about it. I also worked under a graduate student while at Memphis, who's graduate research project was to look at how exercising helps individuals with breast cancer including self-esteem, overall pain, etc. I'm very excited to share this podcast with my aunt and try to attend a class with her. Even simple breathing techniques could help with control!
